What the price of coffee says about the quality of coffee
The price of coffee on the market is very different and buyers usually do not know why. They buy cheap coffee and don't wonder what coffee is, which is more expensive. They don't even try it. If you did, you would give yourself a chance to find out that there is a really great coffee where the palates play. The price of coffee plays a key role here and let’s see why.
Only 10 % people are aware that it is expensive to buy cheap because cheap products are often justifiably cheap and of poor quality. Low-quality cheap coffee people get used to and think there is no better than it, even though they suffer from the bitter taste of roasted. These are people who drink coffee due to addiction and also drink a lot of it, which is not healthy.
However, coffee is pure pleasure, a gourmet food that should delight the palate in the mouth and occasionally, if necessary, offer a person the ultimate pleasure when he chooses it. The price of coffee is suitably higher for premium coffee than ordinary, waste cheap, bitter coffee.
What does the price of coffee say about the coffee you buy?
The price of coffee depends on the following factors:
- from the place where it was grown,
- from the way it is produced,
- from the quality of coffee beans,
- from the way coffee is dried,
- from the readiness of the buyer, how much the coffee costs and the fair price to the grower,
- from the age of coffee,
- of quantity
- from the method of roasting and making coffee.

The high price of coffee depends first of all on where it grows, in which country and province, depending on the taste of the land on which it grows and the climate, the amount of sun and rainfall, and manual, organic production.
We believe that the best conditions for growing and growing coffee are in Central America, but there are many smaller areas where coffee also thrives. There are about 80 countries where coffee thrives and about 50 that are capable of producing coffee for industry. The taste of coffee is influenced by various conditions such as altitude, climate, soil, etc.
Countries with the best coffee:
Colombia produces one of the highest quality types of Arabica. 15 % of world coffee is right from Colombia. The coffees have a rich taste, with a velvety aroma and a fruity aftertaste.
Guatemala is also known for the best coffees, especially because coffees grow in their mountains where the conditions are excellent. The coffee has a sophisticated, pronounced taste, with a slightly light aftertaste.
Ethiopia is also known as the cradle of coffee, offering some of the best variations of Arabica, especially if grown in the Harrar area. It offers fruity flavors, perhaps sometimes smelling slightly of spices and flowers.
Coffee production method and price
Like all plants, coffee can be grown in an intensive, forced and industrial way due to the large quantity that then goes on sale. Such coffee does not taste good as soon as it is a coffee bean, nor does it have a very high quality. Quality is certainly measured by the taste of coffee and the pleasure it brings when drinking it, which barista experts know.
It is best that the coffee is grown on smaller plantations. It is hand-made by farmers, who cultivate it with love in small, limited quantities, which certainly raises the price of coffee. Every year, baristas Klemen and Marina go on a long trip to the plantations to check the quality of coffee and the method of production and its taste.
We are willing to pay a higher price for good coffee to the farmer to maintain quality, because we really appreciate good coffee. In addition, we believe that this is a fair trade, where there is no intermediary in the meantime, and the producer who gets the most for his coffee actually earns the most. When you buy quality coffee that is not cheap, you are supporting certain farmers - people and not mass industries and multinationals.
The price of coffee is also rising due to the transport, which is more expensive, as premium coffee is delivered on a regular basis to keep it fresh, because it is the most delicious. Growers harvest and dry it on a regular basis. The Mariposa café and roastery arrives raw and fresh. Then we roast the coffee on a regular basis. It is mostly sold in grain for professional use in cafes and companies or for home use. It is best to grind it yourself on a regular basis. However, if you consume it immediately, then you can also grind it in the Mariposa roastery for a certain way of making coffee. We grind fine, medium and coarse.

What kind of coffee do we drink in Slovenia?
In Slovenia, the best known is cheap, heavily roasted industrially produced coffee, which has a bitter taste that real coffee should not have. This coffee is cheap and you will deduct an average of 3 euros for it for 200 g. Almost all of this coffee is pre-ground and the question is how long does it then stand in stores or warehouses before it lands in your shopping cart. To be honest, we can say that even these three euros are definitely too much for such coffee. True coffee lovers and connoisseurs would not drink it even if they got it for free.
The price of coffee, which is at a high level, is significantly higher. However, gourmets and connoisseurs accept it because they know why. But don't let yourself be fooled. In various organic stores you will find organic coffee, which also costs an average of 2 euros per 200 grams of ground coffee and is supposed to be made from real, quality coffee beans. This is not entirely true. It is true that large retail chains get it significantly cheaper than small importers than at our roastery, but the question is whether farmers can really produce it in such quantities as they sell in shopping malls. We believe that this is not possible and that it is just a little better quality coffee beans from intensive production. Usually, this coffee is always ground earlier and you do not know how long again, as it is known that after 14 days it turns sour and loses its aroma, like herbs.
Some online stores even offer inferior coffee for 20 euros per 200 grams in order to convince customers of the quality of coffee given the high price. However, the only criterion for the quality of coffee is your taste, as well as the fact that you know who imported the coffee and how, how it was roasted and when it was ground and delivered to you or sent to you by delivery service. Be careful and trust your palates. If you don't know how to recognize good coffee, contact us at Trubarjeva 7 in Ljubljana.
