When Inacio Carlos Urban first arrived in Minas Gerais in 1976, he brought with him his dream of feeding the world and his passion for coffee. In 1984, he bought a farm in Cerrado Mineiro and named it Rio Brilhante, planting his first coffee trees in a sustainable and innovative way.

Rio Brilhante coffee is grown on two farms across 1600 acres at an average elevation of 1150 meters above sea level in the Pantano microregion of Cerrado. Coffee from Rio Brilhante is part of the Regiao Cerrado Mineiro Designation of Origin program, indicating it follows stringent criteria for social and environmental best practices. The Designation of Origin verifies the full traceability of coffee from Rio Brilhante, including warehousing, export, and import all by parties accredited as participants in the Cerrado Mineiro Designation of Origin integrated coffee chain.

Following his father’s footsteps, producer Ricardo Tavares has dedicated his life to the coffee industry. Ricardo’s father began in the roasted coffee industry, delivering products to meet the demands of Brazil’s domestic coffee consumption. Ricardo began his own story in the world of coffee business at age 19, when he accompanied his father on a trip to northern Brazil. After returning from the rolling hills of coffee trees, Ricardo decided not to continue his career as an economist and, instead, dedicated himself entirely to the purchase and sale of coffee beans in the interior of Minas Gerais.

Primavera’s agility in responding to new agricultural research and technology and to new trends in consumer preference is one of its main assets. For example, microlots are dried on raised beds, coffee is intercropped with shade trees on specially selected plots of the property, Honey processing eliminates the use of water, and coffee is evaluated constantly to find the best cup profiles. Primavera is the future of Brazil specialty coffee!

The Chapada de Minas is a small and beautiful region with stunning topography shaped by plateaus and river canyons. The flatter plateau areas promoted the mechanization of the region’s coffee plantations. Coffee cultivation began in the 1870’s, which brought significant economic benefit to the region by increasing employment opportunities. Among all coffee regions, this area is the most important for small producers and is essential to the local economy.

Most of the coffees from Chapada de Minas are Natural processed, but Washed coffee processing is growing and has become a very interesting alternative for small and large producers.

The Cerrado Mineiro region, located in northwest of Minas Gerais State is a world-recognized, high-quality coffee producing origin and became the first Protected Geographical Indication in Brazil in 2005, with full Designation of Origin in 2013. A strong characteristic of this region is its well-defined seasons—a hot, wet summer followed by a pleasantly dry winter. The dry climate during harvest eliminates potential problems with humidity during the drying process.

Minas Gerais is Brazil’s principal agricultural state, and the Cerrado is home to many of the country’s celebrated coffee estates, with expertise in planting, harvesting, drying, and sorting. We love Cerrado coffees for their big body, rich chocolate notes, and velvety texture when pulled as espresso.

Cerrado coffee farms are cultivated in areas with elevations varying between 800 and 1,300 meters above sea level and are known for consistently producing high quality coffees with a repeatable profile. Many producers are second or third generation growers who also hold degrees in agronomic engineering, business management, and administration.
