The meaning of Sidney Grünewald’s name has everything to do with his life story. In the Pomerania region of Germany, where Sidney’s family is from, Grünewald means “green forest,” which is a striking feature of his property located in Alto Barra Encoberta, 27km from the city of Itarana. After years dedicated to excavation work, Sidney ended up joining the specialty coffee culture through unforeseen circumstances. His father, Laudelino Grünewald, died in February of 2015 at age 58, leaving two rural properties to his two children to manage.
Sidney, and his brother Siderly, are the fourth generation of coffee producers in their family and work together to manage the farms left to them by their father, which total 21 hectares and have five and half planted with coffee. Sidney will leave the property to his son, Luiz Otavio, to continue the legacy.
